History and Facts about Piedmont, Alabama

On March 10, 1871, Cross Plains citizens voted for incorporation; a second vote was cast for re-incorporation May 15, 1882. Cross Plains became Piedmont on September 1888 by an act of the Alabama Legislature.

Piedmont is located in one of the most beautiful and clean

areas of the state of Alabama. The city is at the foot of Duggar Mountain, which is Alabama's second highest mountain and a declared wilderness area within the Talladega National Forest. Piedmont is about 25 miles east of Gadsden and Interstate Highway I-59, about 25 miles north of Anniston and Interstate Highway I-20. We are about 90 miles east of Birmingham, and about 90 miles west of Atlanta.

Outdoor recreation opportunities are plentiful in the area.

Weiss Lake, Lake Neely Henry, and the Coosa River are nearby, as well as numerous creeks and streams. Duggar Mountain Wilderness Area, Talladega National Forest, and ChoccoloccoWildlife Management Area provide hunting, fishing, and camping. The Pinhoti trail offers hiking, and the Chief Ladiga trail provideshiking, biking, and wheelchair touring opportunities.

The City of Piedmont has a quality school system, ranked high in academics. There are junior colleges, community colleges, and Jacksonville State University within a short drive. Utilities are city owned, and are available to homeowners and businesses at a conservative rate.

Although we have beautiful scenic mountains all around Piedmont, much of the land right around the city is flat to gently rolling, offering you plenty of commercial and residential opportunity.


Piedmont municipal government is the Mayor and Council form. The mayor is elected at large, with seven council members elected from seven districts. Day to day operation of the city government is overseen by a city administrator. The city has a full service recreation department with a sports complex and a civic center. There are three parks with walking tracks and playground facilities. In addition to these parks, there is Alabama's first Rails to Trails project, the Chief Ladiga Trail. Piedmont's civic clubs include Lions Club, Lioness Club, American Legion, V.F.W., Jaycees, Oddfellows, and other topical, historical, and study clubs. The Piedmont Journal-Independent is published weekly. WPID A.M. and WJCK FM offer music and informational programming. There are over 20 churches including 22 Protestant and one Catholic.
